A cute sparrow sized bird that is found in the open fields and grass lands across Asia especially near water. The name of the Genus this bird, Red-Munia belongs to is derived from the city of Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat state in India. The birds mainly feeds on grass seeds. You will easily observe a flock of these birds together and once in a while they do perch around and give you a split second opportunity frame them. The male bird wears the bright red plumage during the breeding time which is usually around the monsoon times. In areas around Bangalore it has been observed to have this plumage during October – November. Another interesting fact is that after the breeding time the beak of the bird changes colors and it becomes black when the summer arrives. These are popular cage birds because of the lovely colorful plumage the male bird has during the breeding season. The male also looks pretty much like the female when not in breeding season. Close

In areas around Bangalore it has been observed to have this plumage during October – November. The bird is seen here carrying a nesting material – a flower in the beak. The bird keeps collecting the nesting material until the chicks hatch and are ready to leave the nest.

Malabar trogon Male

The Malabar trogon (Harpactes fasciatus) is a species of bird in the trogon family. It is found in the forests of Sri Lanka and peninsular India. In India it is mainly found in the eastern Ghats, hill forests of central India and in parts of the eastern Ghats. The male has a slaty black head and breast with a white border to the black bib separating it from the crimson on the underside. The back is olive-brown to chestnut.The female lacks the contrasting black and crimson and has only a slightly darker head and breast that shades into the olive brown on the back while the crimson of the underside of the male is replaced by ochre. This is classified as least concern by IUCN.

Oriental magpie robin male

This is an male oriental mapie robin. The male has glossy blue-black upperparts, head, throat and upper breast. Long tail is black, with white outer feathers. Wings are black with two bold, long, white wing bars. Underparts are white. The female is differentiated from the male by dull dark grey instead black on the same body parts. This bird is commonly found in in parks and gardens, cultivated areas and open woodlands. It also frequents human habitation surroundings. The main food for this bird is ground insects, worms, snails. It is the national bird of Bangladesh.
