About the physical structure of tigers….

The physical appearance of these beautiful orange furred animals is unique. The vertical black colored stripes all over the orange body makes their appearance an interesting one and the patterns found on their body is different from tiger to tiger. People who are involved in the activities like tiger census would use the patterns on their body to identify tigers.

Not only that! Tigers are known for their camouflage skills and they help them well in grasslands. The size – height and weight of the tiger varies from species to species. Bengal White tigers are the subspecies which have a beautiful thick white colored fur with black stripes on their body. Some subspecies of tigers have legs covered with white colored fur and golden fur on the upper body.

Where are they found?

Tigers being an endangered animal, are found mostly in Asian continent only. Habitat reduction and poaching are the major causes of the decreasing population of tigers. Javan, Bali and Caspian tigers are considered as extinct species. Royal Bengal tiger, Malayan Tiger, Siberian Tiger, Sumatran tiger and South China Tiger are some of the well known subspecies of tigers. India is rich in tiger population when compared with other Asian countries. To save this animal from extinction, many countries are conducting campaigns to create awareness on the tiger protection. Based on a global census approximately 3890 tigers are surviving now. Good news is, there is a 22% increase in the population of tiger worldwide.

About the life style of tigers..

Tigers like to live in large territories with their families. Male tigers need at most 100 square kilometers of area while  the female tigers need at least 20 square km. Young ones start to make territory near their mothers, and they end up with their own territory other than their mothers when they grow big.

Like other animals, territory marking is another common behavior found among these big cats. Tigers spray their urine on the trees and other landmarks to mark their territory. They also make marks on trees by using their strong sharp claws. Actually, scent marking helps them to warn or convey messages to other tigers around them. When entering into others territory, by smelling or sniffing the scent marks made by the tiger, other tigers could know the information like age and sex of the tiger in a particular area. Male tigers are intolerant of other tigers to enter their territory. Though they fight to retain their territories, one tiger’s relationship with other tigers is considered as an unpredictable one. Some tigers, though not related to its territory, tigers share their kill with strangers and their cubs too. Mostly female tigers take part in raising their young ones. Occasionally, male tigers also take the responsibility to take care of the abandoned young ones. It happened in Rathambore in India that, a male tiger raised the cubs of a female tiger when they lost their mother.

When the cubs will become independent?

Tiger cubs born blind. Young cubs need their mother’s direct attention upto 8 months after birth. Mother tiger feeds them milk for 6 months and teaches her hunting skills when they grow. When the cubs reach 2 to 2 1/2 years of age, they excel in hunting skills and they become completely independent. They will form a separate territory near to their mother’s.

How do they hunt?

Tigers are known for their excellent hunting skills. Deers, Chitals, Indian gaurs, buffaloes are their main preys. Monkeys, wild boars are also in their menu list. Mostly they hunt animals with atleast 90-100 kgs in weight. Some reports say that a dominant tiger could hunt a prey of 250 kgs.

Tigers do not run more to catch the prey (though they could run at a speed of 60 km/h), but for a short distance they run fast at the time of chasing.  Their camouflage skills help them to hide easily from their target and they act fast when the prey is at a hunt-able distance. They usually grab their prey by using their full strength and they knock off it by biting the throat of the prey.
