(Buzz…..Buzz…………………….Buzzy comes there. She is waiting for our friend Chippy.)
Buzzy the Bee: Hello Kids, I am Buzzy the Bee! I am happy that you are joining me here with Chippy. I am waiting for her to share more news on wildlife. Last month, we discussed about my own family, the bees. Today, I have collected more information on the family of insects. Chippy will say, what is the topic of this month. Lets wait!
CHIRP! CHIRP! CHIRP!
Buzzy: Could you hear her Chirping?
(Chippy comes there!)
Chippy: Hi Buzzy, How are you my dear friend? Sorry for coming late. But, I don’t want to miss some wonderful view.
: Is it? I think you have seen something very fascinating. What is that?
: Yes, you are correct. I saw a migration of thousands of butterflies. It was like thousands of flowers flying on the sky. Buzzy, you know something about this?
Buzzy: Yes, I know more on them. Migration of butterflies are common in some species. Most of the butterflies won’t leave their habitat. Only some of the species migrate to very long distances and to nearby by areas. This activity depends on their food requirement and the weather conditions around their living places. You know, the migration of Monarch butterflies from Canada to Mexico in winters in a well known one.
Chippy: Oh! Really? I want to know more about these species? Could you tell me more?
Buzzy: Why not? I think you may know, the life cycle of the butterfly?
Chippy: Yes, The four stages namely – egg, caterpillar, pupa and finally the fully grown adult butterfly. Could new share something interesting on this?
Buzzy: Yes, I could. The female butterfly lays eggs on the plant it chooses by its senses. Mostly they will lay only one egg on one plant. But some other species of this family, will lay up to 100 eggs on the plant. Interesting thing is, they particularly choose a food plant so that the young ones will feed on the leaves of the plant. While some of the eggs hatches in one day, others may take even months. From the hatched egg, a caterpillar comes out. It has 5 pairs of little feet on their body which helps them to grab the plant or leaf it lives on.
Chippy: mm. I like the caterpillars too. But these tiny species has to be alive to become a butterfly..
Buzzy: I was about to say an interesting thing, the friendship between ants and caterpillars.
Chippy: Friendship?
Buzzy: A kind of. The caterpillar could produce a small liquid substance like honey from its special glands. This is served as food for ants. As a gratitude, the ants help them in danger when the caterpillars call for help by making sounds from their body.
Pupa
Chippy: Wow! Amazing! Tell me more on the caterpillars!
Buzzy: The caterpillar sheds out its old skin and new skin will grow again. As this molting process is repeated for 4 to 5 times, it changes into a pupa. From this stage it turns into a beautiful butterfly. They could live up to 1 year. Butterflies have compound eyes which are very powerful to see ultra violet light.
Chippy: Do you know, what gives the colors to a butterfly?
Buzzy: There are tiny scales on their wings. These scales have colors and patterns that gives a beautiful look for the butterflies.
Chippy: What an amazing insect this is! Adding colors to wildlife! Thanks Chippy, for sharing wonderful information with me!
Buzzy: Yes, no doubt in this! Amazing species! OK, I will meet you next month with some other stories. Bye!
